Vista is giving me the shits, thanks Adobe

Posted on May 3, 2007. Filed under: Lolograms, Programming, Web Based Blunders |

But not for any of the “usual” reasons.  For some reason Adobe have retardulated Opera and Internet Explorer, so when I try to watch South Park episodes over at www.allsp.com it takes a few goes because the Flash Player plugin is screwing up.

I don’t blame Vista.  Lots of people dislike it because it’s made by Microsoft, but if anything that makes me trust it more.  I’m a C# programmer by trade and work with Microsoft technologies, software and servers 5 days a week.  Overall I’m quite happy with Vista.  Once I disabled all the cheesy eyecandy I got all the benefits of Vista with most of the look and feel of Windows 2000.  Goodbye sidebar, I already have digg and reddit to distract me constantly.

Honestly I expect a better effort from Adobe.  I’ve uninstalled the Flash Player, reinstalled the Flash Player and even re-installed Flash itself.  I don’t have “problems” on my laptop, except when I try to view anything that uses Flash.  Like one of the projects I’ve got on at the moment – it uses a piece of flash for some navigation (I’d like to thank the design department, who made the transition from print to web seamlessly …. at my expense) and some of the content containers hold presentations / promotions, and then there’s the tv section which holds a bunch of episodes made by the people I work for.

You’re not helping me Adobe.  For future reference maybe you shouldn’t release crapped up beta software before it’s actually completed?  Even though the Flash Player is free it should carry just as much weight as Photoshop since it’s also an industry standard, not to mention your future on the internet.

There’s a bunch of people out there saying to re-install Flash Player … just how many times do I need to do it?  There’s also loads of people complaining about Flash Player crashing IE / Opera / Firefox / whatever other browser.

Do something about it chumps.  It’s obviously not my vivid imagination, which was the culprit when I thought Apollo had a chance against XAML.  With an intimacy with both Flash and .NET you’re making an upcoming, career altering decision very easy for me.

Hi,

Can you provide the system info (platform, OS, browser version), player version info, and the url where you are crashing so that we can investigate this issue asap? It would be great if you can email me offline with the info.

Or, you can submit it through the free email support for install issues: http://www.adobe.com/go/supportportal/

Either way is fine. We are working to isolate the root cause of Vista install issues and detailed information such as this is extremely important to us.

Thanks,
Emmy

Wow. I’m actually really, truly impressed. Thanks for responding! I’ve forwarded this to the support email you linked.

The most common publicly accessible offender is http://www.allsp.com which embed Flash from various video sites. Most episodes of South Park are *very* not safe for work just so you know, and the legality of them being available on the hosting sites is questionable, and by questionable I mean illegal. But anyway.

Here are error logs from Opera, Firefox and Internet Explorer crashes. All of the Internet Explorer logs associate Skype as the problem, but as far as I know Skype isn’t touching Opera or Firefox.

yes i know what you mean i cant do anything that requires flash. it is really getting on my nerves and needs to be fixed. if you find a way to fix it please let me know.

All you can do for now is uninstall/reinstall it or file a report using the link’s Emmy provided in the first comment.

I’m sure Adobe’ll get to the bottom of it soon…ish.
